Glossary

There are many Identity terms and identity acronyms, here is a guide to them all. 

TermDescription
ValidationThe processes of validating the presented information, such as checking that a number is in a valid format or that information appears correctly.
VerificationThe process of verifying that the information is correct by cross checking against an authoritative source. For example checking that a name and address exist within a database.
AuthenticationThe process of ensuring that something is real, which could be confirming that a person is who they claim to be or that a document is a real authentic document.
AuthorisationThe process of providing permission, usually refersto allowing system access.
Relying PartyA person or organisation who is using an identity service.
Level of AssuranceA definition for the level of assurance that a person has been asserted to. The Level of Assurance (LoA) will have been defined in a standard. The use of LoA is defined in ISO/IEC 29115:2013 Information technology — Security techniques — Entity authentication assurance framework.
Multi Factor AuthenticationThe process of using multiple factors of authentication. Also refered to as MFA, requires confirmation of:
