Telstra data breach exposes 132,000 customers

Australia’s telecoms giant Telstra (Telstra Corp Ltd) (TLS.AX) has reported a data breach impacting 132,000 customers. On Sunday the company said that an internal error had led to the disclosure of customer details.

Telstra has 18.8m customers, which is equivalent to 75% of the Australian population. The breach was discovered during an internal review, which found mis-alignment between two databases.

Customer’s names and addresses were included in the open directory when they should not have been. This issue was caused by an internal problem and not a cyber security incident.
